About Son of Thanjai

Son of Thanjai is a historical 3D action-adventure game set in the Chola Empire.

Developed by Ayelet Studio, Son of Thanjai stands out through its Tamil-inspired setting and the personal story of a fallen prince. Players follow Vinnendhiran through political conflict, dangerous roads, and difficult choices about power. Its main gameplay elements are outlined below.

  • Explore 11th-century Thanjai, farmlands, ruins, roads, and wastelands.

  • Fight with the flexible Surulvaal coiled sword in close combat.

  • Use stealth routes to complete encounters without open fighting.

  • React to changing weather, NPC routines, gossip, and time of day.

A Chola Empire Story Shaped by Choice

Son of Thanjai follows Vinnendhiran, a young prince who has fallen from grace and must face betrayal, invading dangers, and his own weaknesses. The story takes place in an 11th-century world inspired by Tamil history, with Thanjai serving as the central backdrop. Rather than presenting the setting as static scenery, the game uses its political tension and social atmosphere to support the prince’s struggle to decide what kind of ruler he may become.

Exploration moves beyond the city into Kaveri farmlands, open roads, Paalai wastelands, and temple ruins. These locations give the journey a clear change of mood, from populated areas where conversations matter to exposed routes where threats can emerge. The historical setting is a major reason to follow the game, especially for players looking for an action-adventure game outside familiar medieval fantasy worlds.

Surulvaal Combat and Directional Threats

Combat centers on the Surulvaal, a whip-like coiled sword rooted in regional martial traditions. Son of Thanjai uses high and low attacks, special moves, and enemies that can approach from any direction. Fights therefore ask players to watch positioning instead of only focusing on the opponent directly ahead. In the available demo controls, high and low strikes are mapped to the X and A buttons on a controller.

Fury points support Targeted Strike, which lets players choose a body area such as an enemy’s head or hand. This creates more deliberate moments during close combat, particularly when facing a dangerous opponent. A fire-circle ability can also weaken nearby enemies’ defenses before an attack, making crowd encounters less dependent on constant direct strikes.

Fear Can Change the Outcome of a Fight

The morale system gives combat a psychological angle. Son of Thanjai allows enemies to become terrified, lose their defenses, panic, or even run away when pressure builds. This means a battle does not always end because every opponent is defeated. Creating fear can open space to escape, isolate a target, or deal with a remaining enemy more safely.

This system fits the game’s harsh combat tone, which includes graphic violence, executions, and dismemberment. Players who are comfortable with that content may appreciate how intimidation has a practical effect instead of being only visual. Those who prefer less direct confrontation can often avoid escalating encounters through the stealth-focused approach.

Living Locations and Stealth Routes

The world changes through day-and-night cycles, weather, NPC schedules, memories, and gossip. Son of Thanjai makes conversations and timing relevant because people may be in different places or react differently as the world moves through its routines. Revisiting an area at another time can provide a different atmosphere and potentially alter how an encounter develops.

Stealth offers an alternative to fighting every guard or hostile group. Players can choose quieter routes, observe enemy positions, and avoid contact where possible. This flexibility is useful when exploring ruins or roads with threats on several sides, although the final balance and mission variety may change before release.
