Ney: Sufi Reed Flute & Makam

Ney is the reed flute of the Sufi tradition, played on your screen with your own breath. Blow into the microphone or touch the breath pad, finger the perdes, and a sampled ney answers in the true komas of the makam.

Play peşrevs, saz semâîsi and türküs over a dem and usul drums, check your real ney with the perde meter, or close your eyes in the Tefekkür meditation.

Play it like a real ney

Start on the perde board: the makam's perdes from low to high across the landscape screen, with zoom for bigger keys. Or play the ney itself, with its six holes and the thumb hole.

• Easy fingering plays each perde with one finger; real fingering lets every hole work on its own

• Slide to the rim of a hole for a half hole

• Blow softly for Kaba, harder for Hemâhenk, Tiz and Tiz+

• Bend a note with the lips and slide between perdes to slur them

Blow into the microphone

Turn on mic breath and the ney follows your own breath: a gentle breath sounds the deep kaba perdes, a stronger one overblows into the higher registers. It calibrates to your room in a few seconds, it is free, and the sound never leaves your device.

7 ney sounds, 13 ney sizes

Seven sampled sounds: Ney, Neyzen with its breathy tasavvuf tone, Bright ney, Şah neyi, Arabic nay, Ney tavrı with the neyzen's scoop into every note, and the dem ney that holds the drone. Choose your ney by its ahenk, from the long Bolâhenk through Dâvud, Şah, Mansur, Kız, Yıldız, Müstahsen and Süpürde to the short Bolâhenk nısfiye, with the mâbeyn sizes in between. All 13 sizes sound at their true pitch, and a fine tune matches another instrument.

53 makams in true komas

Every perde sits on the 53-koma grid, so Segâh, Hicâz and Sabâ sound as they should. Choose from 53 makams and folk ayaks, from Rast, Uşşak and Hüseynî to Sultânîyegâh and Ferahfezâ, each with a seyir guide that lights the way through the makam. Name the perdes in Turkish (Rast, Dügâh, Nevâ), with letters or with Do Re Mi. A dem holds the durak under you, the double dem adds the güçlü, and 21 usuls on darbuka, bendir, def, kudüm and davul keep the rhythm.

113 pieces to listen to and play along

44 peşrevs, saz semâîsi and şarkıs by the masters of the ney's repertoire, among them Neyzen Azîz Dede, Neyzen Sâlih Dede, Neyzen Yusuf Paşa, Tanbûrî Cemil Bey and Tatyos Efendi, written in neyzen notation. Add 16 taksim studies and 53 Turkish folk songs (türküs). Listen first and watch the perdes light up, then Play along, one section at a time, with the next perde lit as you go.

Ear training for komas

Name the intervals, hear which Si follows Dügâh, recognise the çeşnis and tell the makam from its seyir.

Tefekkür: ney meditation

A dem holds the makam while the app plays a ney taksim that never repeats, phrase after phrase, in 16 makams from Uşşak and Hüseynî to Hicâz and Bûselik. Follow the breathing guide, join in softly if you like, and let the sleep timer fade it out. Good for calm, focus and sleep.

Perde meter for your real ney (Pro)

Play your own ney into the microphone: the perde meter names the perde, shows how many komas flat or sharp you are and in which register, marks the perdes of the makam, and can tell which ahenk your ney is.

Record your playing

Record with the dem and every koma kept, and listen back. With Pro, keep unlimited recordings and share them as WAV audio or as MIDI.

Made to be played anywhere

Works fully offline, in 30 languages, with a left-handed layout.

Free and Pro

Ney is free to play, with one banner ad that stays clear of the ney. A short optional video opens a locked sound, makam, piece or usul until you close the app. Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription: it removes the ads and unlocks everything, including every sound, makam, usul and piece, the double dem, your own perde tuning, all ear training, the sleep timer, unlimited recordings with WAV and MIDI export, and the perde meter.

Played Ney before? This is the same app, rebuilt from scratch, and your saved recordings are still here.
